New Zealand Dryland Forests Innovation’s (NZDFI) vision is for New Zealand to develop a multi-regional sustainable hardwood industry based on our improved durable eucalypts. Forest growers can contact one of our licenced nurseries to place an order for XyloGene improved durable eucalypt nursery stock.

These nurseries are skilled propagators who can produce high grade forestry nursery stock from XyloGene improved seedlots. NZDFIP Ltd has seed of improved genetic quality available, thanks to advances made by our tree breeding programme.
Our germplasm has been selected after testing in New Zealand environments with varying biotic and abiotic factors that influence tree growth. It has an advantage over unpedigreed provenance collections imported from Australia or those made from NZ stands planted with only one or two provenances.
XyloGene improved seedlots are collected from our clonal seed orchards (CSO) and our seedling seed orchards (SSO) in north-eastern New Zealand. Our improved seed is of mixed elite family origin that has outcrossing vigour and improved wood properties.
XyloGene seedling royalty fees
For the forest grower wanting to plant in 2026, our licenced nurseries are propagating their seedlings from NZDFI’s genetically improved seedlots.
These include:
- E. bosistoana 1st generation clonal seed orchard seedlots.
- E. globoidea 1st generation seedling seed orchard seedlots.
- E. cladocalyx, E. macrorhyncha and E. quadrangulata 1st generation seedling seed stand seedlots.
These are the best genetics available and will produce increased productivity and quality gains at the end of rotation.
The royalty fees for each are shown in the list below. Royalty fees are paid to the nursery as part of the seedling cost. The nursery then pays these fees to NZDFIP Ltd to support our R&D programme.

Royalty fees for our E. cladocalyx, E. macrorhyncha and E. quadrangulata seedlots are charged at 5 cents per seedling.
XyloGene IP protection
All XyloGene seedling sales by nurseries are under the following conditions:
- Any seedlings propagated cannot be used for production of cuttings or any other vegetative propagules.
- Seedlings cannot be used for breeding purposes or for seed production.
